About my design philosophy
Mid Century Modern (MCM) is a style of architecture and design which describes mid-20th century developments in modern design, architecture and urban development from roughly 1933 to 1965. Count Frank Lloyd Wright (US), Alvar Alto (Italy), Charles & Ray Eames (US), Isamu Noguchi (Japan/US) and Jacob Kjær (Denmark) as endemic designers associated with this period.
Working for IBM I was attending a meeting at our Armonk headquarters and was shocked to find my favorite designers (interior, architecture and furniture) represented very broadly in our campus. It turns out the Eames brothers played an important role in IBM's culture as brand ambassadors. The couple designed everything from the exhibit at the 1964 World’s Fair, to the film Powers of 10, to the famous exhibit Mathematica, to dozens of educational films for school and television that helped teach generations about science, math and technology.
My wife and I live in a mid century modern home, an outlier in a NJ neighborhood replete with colonial homes and more traditional styles. Through her great eBay wisdom, my wife has furnished us with Eames chairs and a gorgeous wall to wall bookcase designed by Poul Caduvious (buying bits and pieces from multiple sellers).
So when she asked me to design a bookcase for our son's room she wanted it to be simple and have the rounded corners which fit into our environment. Here is an early sketch:
